Overcoming Being Afraid of Getting Tired

Let me ask you a question...

When you’re in the middle of a workout and you stop because you feel fatigued, why do you really stop? Do you stop because you don’t like being uncomfortable? Do you stop because you’re afraid of taking your body too far? Are you afraid that you’ll get injured or that your heart might give out?

Now let me ask you another question...have you ever actually went past that point to find out what really happens? Most of us stop because we’re afraid something bad might happen and we don’t like feeling uncomfortable. But the truth is, most of the things we’re worried about WON’T happen.

I’ve put myself through some of the most insane training my crazy mind can think up, and none of those fears ever came true. Truth be told, a lot of the training I’m talking about wasn’t smart to do in the first place, like dropping 15 pounds in 90 minutes. Obviously my legs were totally burnt, lungs begging for air, vision getting a little blurry from the water loss. Yes it was stupid, but I kept going for two reasons: I trusted my body and I trusted the science behind my training plan. I DO NOT EVER recommend anyone try this; in fact I expressly encourage you never ever attempt it.

The point is this: if a person can do something that difficult and intense and still not have anything bad happen to them, then all of your fears about going that extra mile during your workout just aren’t true. The only thing that could come from doing that extra mile is growth, both mentally and physically.

Remember, our limitations are created by ourselves and don’t actually exist. And when you take yourself beyond the point of discomfort, you will find that too. Push yourself beyond what you think you can handle. Give yourself a chance to discover what you’re truly capable of.
