Championship Mindset Series: Bring the Fight

Bring the Fight

Walk inside the circle. Straps up. Foot to the line.

What are your intentions? What is your attitude? How is your energy?

Ninety percent of wrestling is mental, meaning a majority of your potential for victory is decided before the first whistle is ever even blown. In a six to seven minute grueling high-intensity match, how should your mindset be? After all, although perfection is the pursuit, imperfection is the reality. No situation is going to be perfect…it’s about finding a way to win even in imperfect situations, sometimes the odds stacked against you with your back against the wall. And the only way to find that victory is to fight and pursue point after point, succeeding in more positions than your opponent.

But in wrestling there’s more than one battle going on. There’s the physical battle and there’s the mental battle. Forgoing positions without making it a fight doesn’t drain any energy from your opponent, and it definitely doesn’t place strain on their mental toughness. In positions where dominance and psychological abuse can be exercised, it is your duty as a competitor to break your opponent’s spirit and crush their hope that they can ever succeed against you, in this match or any match for the rest of time.

Energy. Attitude. Intention.

Walking inside the circle. Foot to the line. My energy is intense and controlled, my attitude is war-ready and confident, and my intentions are to fight through every position and scoring opportunity both for me and against me and to break my opponent’s will and crush their hope for any chance of victory.

During my training, during my warm-up, and during my matches the mindset remains the same and holds strong despite any and all adversity. Why? Because with this mindset WE WANT THE FIGHT, we want it to be hard, and we want our opponent to give us the best they’ve got. We live for the fight.

When we put our foot on the line and that first whistle blows….the war begins.
