5 Questions to Ask Yourself to Stick to Your Plan Longer
Whether you want to lose weight, eat a better diet, or have a healthier routine, sticking to your plan can seem more like a burden than a pathway to success. Sliding back into old habits feels SO easy yet keeping up with the plan feels like climbing a mountain. Almost inevitably, we slide back into our old ways and beat ourselves up for not sticking the plan. So….why can’t you stick to your plan longer? Here are five questions to find out why.
What is your “why”? Why do you want to achieve your goal?
Answering this question will tell you how strong your motivator is. The strength of this motivator is determined by your emotions tied to it. If you can’t physically feel how deep this emotion is, your “why” may not be strong enough.
Where is the source of your motivation? Are you the one choosing to reach this goal?
Sometimes when we start out on a plan, we are only doing it because someone encouraged us to or we know we “should.” But unless it is your complete personal CHOICE to pursue this goal, you are likely to slide off the rails and not finish. It must be your choice.
Do you truly believe in your plan’s ability to produce your goal?
If you don’t 100% believe in your plan, doubt will come in and wreak havoc on any motivation you have. Most of your mental energy will be spent fighting that doubt rather than being used to produce your desired end result.
Do you have others to do the plan with you and support you along the way?
Ironically, one of the keys to self-improvement is being able to relate with others. You are much more likely to stick to your plan and achieve your goal when others are doing the plan with you, or something similar.
Is your plan a priority to you?
Do you prioritize your plan over other plans? For instance, if your goal is to eat healthy every night of the week, but your friends asked you out for a dinner, would you go to the dinner and order an appetizer, entre, and dessert? Or do you stick to your plan and order chicken salad? If it’s easy for you to “take the night off,” maybe your goal isn’t a priority for you at the moment.
After answering these questions and having a quick heart-to-heart moment with yourself, you will understand why you might not be sticking to your plan longer. But…there is some good news. By knowing what is holding you back, you know exactly what things you need to change in order to finish your plan like you intend to.
