What It Means to Have a True Fight Mentality
In today’s world, what it means to be called competitive and a fighter is heavily influenced by what we see on TV and social media from UFC fighters, boxers, professional athletes, and anyone else at the top level of their sport. Trash talk is abundant, the disrespect is high, and when the fight comes the fans are most of the time disappointed with the lack of action and grit. So if all the words and remarks don’t equal to a person having fight when it counts, what does? What does it mean to have a true fight mentality?
The first part of a true fight mentality is having a drive to perform, to keep pushing the limits, and to score as many points as possible. Competing is way more fun when you get to open up your arsenal and use what you’ve learned. As long as there is time on the clock and breath in my body, I am going to keep going, keep moving, and keep looking to score.
Secondly, a person with a true fight mentality wants to dominate their opponent, to crush their hope for victory in this and every future matchup, and make it so their opponent never wants to face them again. Dominance can only happen by continually looking to score and pushing the boundary to a point my opponent is not willing to go.
The third part is welcoming adversity. Most competitors will look for the easiest way to do something, but a true fighter isn’t looking for the easiest way…only the best way. And often times, the best way requires fighting through a hard position and putting forth more effort than before. A true fighter thrives when situations get difficult and welcomes them because they make competing much more meaningful and fun.
Overall, a person with a true fight mentality WANTS tough matches to test their limits and use their fullest potential. Competing is fun when you get to be your truest self, and the only way to be that is by finding an opponent who will bring that out of you.
Finally and most importantly, a true fighter is someone who competes for the fight and to test their limits, not for prizes, titles, or to put others down. Because they are focused solely on the fight, they feel no need to tell others they are “better than” or what they are going to do. They know words do not equate to fight and are essentially meaningless in terms of who will come out on top in a real battle.
A true fight mentality is one that looks to score as many points as possible, strives to dominate every position, welcomes adversity and looks for the best way not the easy way, seeks for and wants the toughest matches, and competes for the fight and the fight alone. It’s important to always look beyond surface level, and in today’s world of media it is difficult to do. But when you truly measure someone by how they compete and discount everything else, you will find how much fight they truly have. Changing your perspective on what it means to have a fight mentality will help you be more successful, see through the surface level of your opponents, and allow you to succeed in the tougher battles and continue to succeed in all challenges you will face.
